SNAP Participants: Watch Your Mail For a New EBT Card in September

New Jersey is introducing new chip-enabled Families First EBT cards to provide additional security for SNAP and Work First New Jersey benefits.

SNAP participants throughout New Jersey are expected to receive their new chip cards by mail during September 2026.

The new cards will include a chip and tap-to-pay capability for added security. Participants are encouraged to tap their card whenever possible. If a retailer does not accept the chip card, they will be prompted to swipe the card.

The new card will include the participant's name, account number, and security code and will have a five-year expiration date from the date it is issued.

When Your New Card Arrives

Your new card must be activated, and you will need to select a new PIN. Your current PIN will not be transferred to the new card. Your existing benefit balance will automatically carry over to your new card.

Here's how you can activate your card and select a PIN:

New chip cards must be activated within 90 days, or they will be deactivated.

Your current EBT card will automatically deactivate 60 days after your new card is mailed, so be sure to activate and begin using your new card when it arrives.

Your Card Expiration Date Is Not Your SNAP Expiration Date

The five-year expiration date printed on your new EBT card does not indicate when your SNAP case or benefits expire.

SNAP benefits still expire after nine months of non-use, regardless of the expiration date printed on the card.

Need a Replacement Card?

Anyone requesting a replacement EBT card will now receive a new chip card.

Counties will no longer be able to print new chip cards on-site for same-day replacement. In certain situations, the county may issue a temporary swipe card that can be used for up to two months while your new chip card is mailed.

When you receive a replacement card, you will need to select a new PIN. Your previous PIN will not carry over, but your existing benefit balance will transfer to the new card.

Protect Your Benefits

The new chip technology provides additional security, but it is still important to protect your EBT card and PIN.

Use tap-to-pay whenever possible
Do not share your PIN
Cover the keypad when entering your PIN
Do not write your PIN on your card or keep it with your card
Lock your EBT card when you are not using it through the ConnectEBT app or at NJFamiliesFirst.gov
